Beastro on board as CityMunch launches Food Waste Week in Manchester

8 December 2017

TASTE of Manchester is delighted to see Beastro restored to their premises at Spinningfields Leftbank after a hiatus while a telly food challenge show was shot there. There’s a bright new look to the place and even their website full of appealing festive menus.

Co-owners Richard Brown and James and Heather Taylor are also responding to the season of goodwill by joining a concerted campaign set up by real-time offers app CityMunch. to ensure restaurant food doesn’t go to waste at the end of the day.

From December 11-18 they and fellow CityMunch partner restaurants, including Fusion Lab, Trove, Yard & Coop, Kettlebell Kitchen, Dogs ‘N’ Dough, Bosu Body Bar and Exchange Food & Drink Lounge will be offering up to 90 per cent off food and drink during their last hour of operation. Ethical but also a chance for foodies on a budget to grab a deal.

To ensure nothing is wasted, university volunteers will be on hand to distribute any unsold food to the homeless.

UK restaurants waste 600,000 tons of food a year and it doesn’t stop  there. At Christmas in particular, UK families throw away 4 million meals annually (according to Unilever), putting a massive strain on resources. Watching waste makes good financial sense too, with a family of four able to save as much as £60 per month by cutting down on what they throw out.

Rob Lynch, CEO and Founder of CityMunch says: “Christmas is a time for indulgence, but a shocking amount of what we buy in the festive season ends up in the bin. With our technology, restaurants can connect with users in real-time, letting them know when they have excess food and tempting them in with an offer. If restaurants can cut their food waste to zero, maybe we as households can do our bit too.”

Richard Brown told ToM: “Zero waste is an issue that really involves us and we make every effort not to waste food, reusing left-overs in a  next day special perhaps. And we do take food we haven’t sold across the Booth Centre. It makes sense."

All of the deals will be available through the CityMunch mobile app, which is free to download on both the Apple and Android App stores, and is also active in London and Bristol.
