Cloudwater on the pumps at Pilcrow Pub in joint venture by craft beer kings

22 August 2016 by Neil Sowerby

TASTE of Manchester has watched handmade hostelry The Pilcrow Pub ever so slowly take shape in Sadler’s Yard and wondered: will the quality of the ale match the high-flown artisan sentiments behind the build.

Well, we now know the beer providers and the news couldn’t delight us more, with promise of many hopful nights ahead in the Noma neighbourhood. The pub operators will be All Our Yesterdays – a new partnership between Common and Port Street Beer House owner Jonny Heyes and co-founder of Cloudwater Brew Co Paul Jones.

Heyes and Jones will team up to run the community project, which has been built throughout 2016 with the help of local volunteers in a series of workshops across the city and opens on Friday, September 23.

The Pilcrow will offer a rotating list of seasonal beers from Cloudwater alongside a tailor-made beer, brewed in a barrel assembled by volunteers at the White Rose Cooperage in Yorkshire.

The interior of the pub has been built during a series of weekly masterclasses since January that aim to teach skills often overlooked in modern society, connecting the local community with the space. From basket weaving to beer pump handle making, locals from Manchester have been learning traditional skills to build every element of the city’s newest public house.

Jonny Heyes told us: “We’ve followed the development of The Pilcrow since planning was granted last year, and it’s an exciting opportunity for us to start our new venture somewhere with such a unique story.”
