People’s Choice Dim Sum Su to represent UK in European Street Food Awards

22 September 2017 by Neil Sowerby

CONGRATULATIONS To Dim Sum Su. They may not have scooped Best of the Best in the 2017 British Street Food Awards national finals hosted at GRUB in Manchester’s Mayfield Depot, but our local heroes garnered the coveted People’s Choice, voted for by everyone who came through the doors at the Mayfield Depot on the day.

In what is recognised as the toughest street food competition in the world quite an achievement for Hong Kong born Sue Chiu-Fan Lee and her team with their authentic family style dim sum, gua bao, wontons and spring rolls.

The People’s Choice was decided by ‘a mad minute’ of free tasters, while the top prize was chosen by a guest panel of judges including Andi Oliver, judge on the BBC’s Great British Menu, and Michelin-starred chef Brad Carter.

The Best of the Best winners from the 17 street traders on show (which included Chaat Cart of Marple) were London’s Wingmans thanks to their Best Snack of Bang Coq Wings topped with homemade pickles, toasted sesame, coriander and lime.

Dim Sum Su, Wingmans and runners-up Baked in Brick will now represent the Britain in the inaugural European Street Food Awards in Berlin, where they will  take on national winners from France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Russia, Ireland and the Netherlands.

Dim Sum Su will be hoping for a great double in the Best Street Food category at this year’s Manchester Food and Drink Awards when they are up against Hip Hop Chip Shop, Holy Crab, Otto Men, Blue Caribou and Oh My Glaze. You can still vote here until 9am on Wednesday, September 27. The winners will be announced at the Gala Dinner on Monday, October 9.
