Current Manchester Food and Drink Awards Food Pub of the Year delivers on all fronts. A London sidekick of Gary Rhodes is in the kitchen turning out surf and turf involving Cornish brill and ox cheek, there’s an in-house brewery in the cellar and a raft of local guest ales in the traditional bar; and don’t miss the amazing Technicolor tiles in the top floor loos, reached via the Fallen Angel cocktail lounge. This Bury gamechanger is all down to owner Liam Rutherford, who started his campaign to bring big city cool to Bury with his Automatic Cafe and Malt Real Ale Bar, showcasing ace cocktails and craft beer without over-hipstering the whole enterprise. The bar food matches the a la carte and there’s an excellent wine list, too. A gem.
