Award-winning Italian coffee house Lupo to close

17 October 2017 by Neil Sowerby

SAD news to report about Lupo Caffe Italiano on Chapel Street, Salford. Owners Nico and Ornella have announced via their Facebook page they are to shut after their landlord served them notice. It’s the final straw for this estimable indie outpost following months of income-sapping disruption caused by Network Rail major works nearby.

So you have three weeks to get down and enjoy arguably the region’s best coffee, which won the cafe Best Coffee House at the 2015 Manchester Food and Drink Awards. They were shortlisted again this year (a list that also contained Idle Hands, another small indie cruelly deprived of its base).

Lupo is not just about the beverage, though. It’s revered for its home-made tiramisu and substantial lunch specials such as its mushroom, ricotta and parmesan-packed torta rustica. Hopefully we will not be deprived of such treats for too long. Nico says he is “looking for a new space nearby and in talks about a shop elsewhere.”

Phew, but ToM will still be stocking up on huge cans of their specially imported Buzzonaglia Tuna, richer in flavour than lame supermarket rivals.

Luppo Caffe Italiano, 142 Chapel Street, Salford M3 6AF.
