Beer! Refuge tap takeover, Kosmonaut goes Dutch, Marble turns 20, ABC at Selfridges

EVEN Selfridges is getting into that fashionable craft ale, hosting a Manchester Beer Tasting in collaboration with Alphabet Brewing Co (ABC) in The Exchange Arms, a special pop-up pub in the Exchange Square store’s first floor menswear department from 6pm-8pm. Taste six beers with complimentary snacks with a guide to explain the brews. Tickets £15, book here

THE Refuge Arms, in the basement of the Principal Hotel, is hosting a unique 'tap takeover' and collaboration between two top UK breweries. Art of The Brew, curated by Volta and The Epicurean beer shop in West Didsbury, will unveil Exaltation Session IPA (5.5%ABV) from Magic Rock Brewing Co and Thornbridge Brewery.

Huddersfield based Magic Rock have been in production for over six years and were voted ‘Second Best New Brewery in the world 2012’ on the independent ratings site Rate Beer. 

Market-leading Thornbridge Brewery has a 12-year heritage that began in the grounds of Thornbridge Hall, in the heart of the Peak District and has 350 national and international awards to its name. Who hasn’t downed a pint of Jaipur and discovered hop heaven?

Performing on the night will be pianist to the stars, John Ellis. A secret ingredient in albums by The Cinematic Orchestra, Lily Allen, Corinne Bailey Rae, Tom Jones and many more.  Also, live music and DJ Lord Chester will provide soundtrack to the evening.

Art of the Brew at The Refuge Arms, Oxford St, M60 7HA, will run an initial ‘First Pour & Meet the Brewers’ from 6-8pm. This will include a complimentary Exaltation and a chance to meet the brewers, tickets are priced at just £5 in advance from Eventbrite  – with an open house from 8pm.

CULT Dutch brewer Kees Bubberman of Brouwerij Kees is flying over from Middelburg in the Netherlands to Kosmonaut bar in the Northern Quarter for a night-long tap takeover and meet the brewer  jolly. Former master brewer at world-famous Emelisse, Kees is famous for collaborations with brewers around the world.  

On the night, kicking off at 6pm, there will be a wide selection of liquids making their way through the Kosmonaut pipes, including the flagship Caramel Fudge Stout, En Garde Biere de Garde (Haandbryggeriet collaboration), Smoked Tea Lapsang (Marble collaboration), West Coast IPA and the only keg in Manchester of Double Bourbon Barrel Aged Caramel Fudge Stout.

HAPPY 20th birthday to the Godfather of Manchester’s thriving craft brewing scene, Marble Brewery, which will be celebrating the landmark with a weekend (Dec 1-3) packed full of music, food, special events and the ales that have made it famous. 

Nowadays the brewing operation is down the road from their Marble Arch pub, which has two sibling bars, 57 Thomas Street in the Northern Quarter and the Marble Beer House in Chorlton. The invitation-only birthday party with firework is on the Saturday, but the rest of the weekend at the Marble Arch has lots of treats for the drinking public.
