Grenache plans for continued growth

8 July 2014

TASTE of Manchester was already a huge fan of Grenache, the restaurant that put Walkden on the culinary map. Here’s Neil Sowerby’s review http://tasteofmanchester.com/good-food-guide-favourite-grenache-is-worth-the-journey/from earlier in the year.

Now comes the news that chef Mike Jennings has taken over ownership from the retiring (a contradiction in terms!) Huss Abbas with a  pledge to take it to the next level. The chances are good. In two years at the stove his accomplished cooking – honed under masters such as Shaun Rankin, Gary Rhodes and Nigel Haworth – has garnered a clutch of plaudits.

Grenache made the 2013 Manchester Food And Drink Festival Restaurant of the Year shortlist, was named North West regional winner in the The Good Food Guide Readers’ Awards and scooped two AA rosettes.

Mike said: “It’s something I’ve always talked about doing, going out on my own, and when Huss decided to retire it was the perfect opportunity. We’ve built the restaurant up to a good standard and now I’m really excited to keep pushing it forward.”

He is joined by his wife Karen, from Damson in MediaCityUK, to head up the front of house team. She has previously worked at Aiden Byrne’s Lymm gastropub the Church Green and Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in Cartmel.
