GRUB at Mayfield has lift-off – and don’t miss their Plant Powered Sunday

4 June 2017 by Neil Sowerby

IT’S a big weekend ahead (June 9-11) for the Mayfield Depot, as it begins its journey to major regeneration, and for street food organisers GRUB, chosen to initiate the process with their weekly food fairs there.

Technical issues in converting part of the 24-acre derelict train shed site delayed the planned late May launch party, but the foodie fun finally starts on Friday, June 9 with a pledge that a portion of sales from every drink sold over the entire weekend will be donated to the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund, aiding victims of the Manchester bombing and their families.

On the Friday and Saturday GRUB are offering a rolling rota of six street food traders plus a well-stocked bar and a strong music element. This Friday’s line-up is Mac Daddies, The Ottö-Men,Wallace and Sons, Smak - the Polish Kitchen, What's Your Beef, and The Manchester Doughnut Company. The first three stay on for Saturday, alongside

Oh My Glaze and Street Souvlaki.

Sunday, June 11 sees the launch of Plant Powered Sunday launches – a regular Mayfield Sabbath vegan event serving food, drink and green-inspired activities in collaboration with local gardening groups. Food this time is comfort classics from Wholesome Junkies. We used their Italian tomato tart as our main image because it looked so irresistible.

Beer available via keg, cask and can is a roll call of the north’s finest. It includes: The Runaway Brewery, Blackjack Beers, Marble Brewery, Cloudwater Brew Co, Track Brewing Co., SQUAWK Brewing Company, Hawkshead Brewery, Magic Rock Brewing, Buxton Brewery Company, Torrside Brewing, Legitimate Industries, The Ilkley Brewery, Beatnikz Republic Brewing Co., NORTHERN MONK BREW Co. and North Brewing Co.

Launch party focus will be on the debut of Mayfield Pale Ale, commissioned by the developers U+I from Runaway Brewery. It’s 4.4 ABV and vegan-friendly, using rotating batches of hops from around the world, depending upon seasonality.

GRUB and Runaway, of course, are no strangers. They collaborated in a regular Saturday event at the brewery in Dantzic Street before Jason and Jules Bailey’s street food pop-up operation decamped to larger premises at Alphabet Brewing Co.

GRUB at Mayfield opening party, Fri June 9, 19 12pm-10pm, Mayfield Depot, Baring Street, M1 2AD. Also Saturday, June 10 same times, a formula repeated every weekend from then on in. Dog-friendly, bar takes cards, many traders won’t.
