Ramsbottom's Hearth of the Ram wins Michelin Bib Gourmand prize

26 September 2013

Once again, the Michelin Guide inspectors have not awarded Manchester any fine dining stars  - in spite of the arrival of two Michelin star chef, Simon Rogan at the Midland's French.

But things might look rather different this time next year. It's early days at the French with the restaurant only opening this spring. So its understandable that team Michelin will want to see if Mr Rogan can keep up his excellent work in the landmark hotel.

In the meantime, one of Taste's favourite chefs has won the Michelin Bib Gourmand, an award which recognises good food at a good price.

Abdulla "Naz" Naseem, was head chef at Ramsons for many years, winning the restaurant plaudits and recommendations in every guide to the region (the Good Food Guide was a particularly keen fan). And he's now secured a Bib Gourmand for his cooking at the Hearth of the Ram in Ramsbottom.

New venue

Showing what border on psychic abilities, Taste of Manchester's Neil Sowerby reviewed the Ram earlier this week, describing the MFDF shortlisted Dining Pub as having "everything in place," and that he expects it to be a contender for MFDF Restaurant of the Year in 2014.

Experienced owners, Euan and Dena Watkins, have dined in the likes of California’s The French Laundry, El Bulli and more - so they know good food - however they have sensibly kept what Sowerby describes as "an element of pubbiness".

The menu includes hand-dived king scallops, pea pure puree, pea shoots, venison with smoked gnocchi, crisp monkfish tempura on a celeriac remoulade with a sweet chilli sauce and lemon meringue pie with raspberry sorbet.
