RESURGENT KING STREET TO HOST MAY BANK HOLIDAY FESTIVAL

KING Street has been shaking off its torpor with a retail resurgence and, more high profile, the arrival of top-end restaurant/bars El Gato Negro (above) and Quill. Now it is putting is putting itself in the spotlight with a May Bank Holiday Festival (May 28-30).

The aim of this mix of “fashion, beauty, music, history and complimentary VIP experiences” is to “celebrate the past, present and future of city’s iconic street”.

The King Street Festival is coordinated by Heart of Manchester Business Improvement District, which is laying on across the three days in-store events, gifts and tastings, pop-up English country garden, a bandstand, roving musicians, lawn games and competitions.

Among over 50 enterprises contributing are, on the food and drink side, Bem Brasil, Jamie’s Italian, Miller & Carter, Grill on the Alley and Pizza Express, who’ve got an outdoor dough corner for kids). 

The aforementioned El Gato Negro and Quill are are creating outdoor seating areas specifically for the festival, while Grill on the Alley is hosting an on-street BBQ and outdoor bar. Elsewhere expect complimentary prosecco and nibbles, canapes and menu tasters plus special cocktails and menus.

The King Street Festival bandstand and Classic FM will provide the soundtrack to the weekend with performances from an eclectic range of musicians and bands including jazz and swing travelling band Young Pilgrims (pictured above),1940s style band Bobbysocks, raucous folk and jazz band, The Rubber Duck Orchestra, DJ Thom Docking and cello duo, Cupid’s Bow.

King Street’s rich and surprising history will be celebrated via the festival’s Heritage Trail – a pictorial display throughout the street -– in association with Manchester Histories Festival, alongside a taster of Imperial War Museum North’s new ‘Fashion on the Ration’ exhibition showcasing 1940’s street style. House of Fraser on Deansgate will be teaming up with Imperial War Museum North during the festival to host 1940s hair and make-up makeovers in-store, alongside swing dancers throughout the weekend.
