Review: The secrets of Deansgate's Elixir cocktail bar and venue

By Chris Hemmings

Deansgate is arguably prime real estate in Manchester, but aside from a few restaurants, pubs and, of course, The Locks, there really isn't much in the way of a pleasant bar experience. Cue Elixir. Its location is just the right side of discreet and handily close to Spinningfields' wealth of upmarket establishments.

The current trend for experiential cocktails is admirably embraced by Elixir.  Their new menu offers a strong variety of flavours, each coming with a unique performance. The Flutter-by is ideal after a day trudging the shops. It's a light and refreshing citrus vodka creation garnished with edible creatures for your delight. For the gin connoisseur the Jasmine Cascade comes set within a cloud of jasmine infused dry ice.  There's also the Forget Me Not, which comes comfortably served on a summer lawn (artificial, of course).

Secrets in store

This really is a venue that doesn't get the accord it deserves.  The bar staff are wonderfully attentive, talented and the right amount of cheeky to work in an apothecary.  As an afterwork hang-out it is ideal - but what lies beneath?

Wait until the smaller hours and head downstairs - there's a space for a proper night out.  Quite simply, it's a vast empty space, painted in white with very little furnishings. There's a bar, and plenty of place to dance and this little hideaway is much underused. Perhaps we're more accustomed to finding these spots in a back street Northern Quarter bar, but give it a go, be the first one in there and let the party come to you.
