Shakespeare translates into Italian at San Carlo Bottega

5 October 2016

A FEW gentle dishes of Verona, anyone? Selfridge’s have been celebrating the  400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s passing with fashion events that give a whole new meaning to bardolatry. Now it’s the turn of San Carlo Bottega, poetically-inclined food purveyors inside the Exchange Square store, to launch a celebratory menu inspired by his works, many of which were set in Venice and Verona (13 apparently, San Carlo’s tragic geek tells us).

Enter centre stage Venetian Filippo Pagani, San Carlo’s exec development chef, to create a Shakespeare-inspired menu, available for one week only until Sunday, October 9. So if you love Romeo and Juliet or Two Gentlemen of Verona you might just fancy Venetian specials such as Baccala Mantecato (whipped salt cod crostini, £4.95, above) or homages to Verona such as gnocchi with butter, sage and Monte Veronese cheese (£7.80, below).

Wash them down with Prosecco, Santa Margherita Pino Grigio and Amarone and after a while you’ll be speaking blank verse, too.

San Carlo Bottega, Level 2, Selfridges Exchange Square, Manchester.
