Tasting notes from Mike Garry, poet

My favourite place to eat out in Manchester is… Third Eye Didsbury – Nepalese food at its best and the vegetarian set meal is amazing. A small restaurant but surprisingly comfortable and the staff are lovely and do a bit for a charity back in Nepal.

The best dish I’ve eaten in Manchester recently is… I'm not a main dish kinda guy. i prefer small dishes and you can't beat Aladdin vegetarian meze choices. I usually have some of their fresh hummus, made in the kitchen, a couple of kibbeh and a nice tabouleh.  I think this is the best middle eastern gaff in town. It must be the longest serving as well – I remember going as a kid when my Syrian brother-in-law used to take me

My favourite dining room in Manchester is… Tampopo. I’ve been going for years, it’s ten times better than Wagamama, always with great offers and you can see the kitchen, which I love.

My favourite lunch spot in Manchester is… Firebird Hope in Hatch. I had an amazing veggie burger there  last week.

If I had to eat only on thing for the rest of my days it would be… The tarka dal at Third Eye. It’s incredible. I think I could live off it for the rest of my life.

Moss Side-born Mike is one of the great celebrants of his native city. Set to music, his ‘Ode To St Anthony’, a homage to the late Tony Wilson, was a No.1 UK single, raising money for the Christie Hospital.
