Taste test: Munchy Seeds

10 July 2009

All too often the foods you can grab quickly when you’re hungry and out the house are unhealthy - crisps, chocolate, muffins, biscuits, the list is endless (and is also making my hungry).

But I was sent a box of Munchy Seeds to try, and even just the name makes me smile. So I have been duly munching away on my mixed seeds and am really into them now. The main difference is that your average packet of seeds from Holland and Barrett aren’t that appetising as they come plain, but Munchy Seeds are designed to appeal, and are roasted with different flavours added.

They are available in six flavours including original mix, vanilla pumpkin, pumpkin mix, chilli and omega mix and munchy granola. Most of the flavours are light and a nice way of mixing up an old healthy staple.

My favourite ones were the chilli flavour, and enjoyed the spicy snack, so happily shovelled them in the gob while I was working away. The vanilla pumpkin seeds are a little odd, and taste very custardy, so would probably taste better in a dessert.

But beware as the seeds are really tiny - especially the linseeds - and I keep finding them scatted across my sofa as they do go everywhere when you try to eat them.

The granola was really tasty and worked well sprinkled across Greek yoghurt with fruit for a healthy brekkie.

The seeds are not only tasty, but are rich in Omega 6 and 9, high in iron, zinc and vitamin E. Additionally they are also cholesterol, dairy and gluten free, as well as being free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives.

Prices are very reasonable with a small tub £3.50 and a larger tub £6. They are also available in small sachets for about 55p, and you can buy a box of 24 sachets on the website for £12.50.

Munchy Seeds are available in all good independent health food shops, Lakeland Limited, Waitrose and selected Tesco stores across the UK.

It would be nice if they became available in newsagents as a healthy alternative to the huge range of chocolate, sweets and crisps.
