40 years old and still buzzing, Manchesters original health food shop and café specialises in old fashioned vegetarian favourites. Pasties, soups, hot meals such as vegetable cobblers and lively salads are available to eat in in the illuminated basement (thanks to large skylights) or to take out. Hot apple drinks, herbal teas and vegan chocolate gateaux are further reasons to stop by. The cooking is far from Ottolenghi- contemporary, but theres something comforting about knowing what to expect from the seldom-changing menu with many recipes handed down over generations since the café opened in 1970. Friendly clientele with plenty of students from the Manchester Metropolitan campus just across Oxford Road are another plus point as is the large supermarket upstairs stocking one of the city centres finest range of organic, fair trade and ethically sourced goods.
