Cicchetti, meaning small plates in Italian, is the baby of the thriving San Carlo group of Italian restaurants and bars. Open since 2010 the location is unexpected yet works. Tucked into the back of House of Fraser department store, this intimate restaurant serves Venetian tapas and is decked in chrome, faun leather and marble. Small plate dishes (the progenitors of more familiar Spanish tapas) are served alongside an award-winning selection of mostly Italian wines and beers. Menus change with the season, but favourites such as gnocchi served in a parmesan basket and calves liver and mango crostini remain. Unlike Londons vibrant Polpo chain which serves similarly inspired food, Cicchetti is a place to see and be seen, with lighting and prices to match. We particularly recommend the tartare of fresh tuna mixed tableside, charcuterie platters, petit pizzas and homemade chocolate chip ice cream. Wonderfully comforting food in auspicious surrounds.
