A celebration of food and drink at Southport

Take a bite out of Southport’s food and drink scene at this weekend’s culinary celebration. Head down to the seaside town for a taste of locally grown produce, sample freshly-cooked delights and stroll around the many stalls offering foods from around the world as part of the third annual Southport Food and Drink Festival.

The Town Hall Gardens are bursting with offerings from local producers, including new-season asparagus and juicy tomatoes - all grown just a stone’s throw away from the town.

Home-made pies from Orchard Pigs, warming soups from The Foodie Farmer Fresh Soup Co, fresh salads from Flavour Fresh and pastries from Latham’s Bakery will all be sure to whet your appetite. Strawberry Bank Liqueurs and North Wales Brewing Company are among the drinks producers tempting passers-by with tasters.

Visit the Festival Pavilion for a full line-up of top chef demonstrations that promise to inspire. Here you can experience first-hand how dishes are cooked up at some of Southport’s best restaurants and then sample them for yourself while enjoying a tipple at the Festival Pimms Bar.

Across the road you will find Lord Street lined with continental producers showcasing a selection of foodie delights with everything from Polish sausages to French fruit tarts and Caribbean stews to Greek Baklava.

For a spot of lunch, why not try a balm filled with succulent pork roasted before your very eyes or a home-made sausage or burger all on offer from Graham Eyes Butchers. For something hotter, try a Thai curry from Chaophraya’s stall and for something sweet sample a crepe from Crepe Temptation.

While in Southport, take time to explore the town’s gastronomic gems such as the Nostalgia Tearoom, on Lord Street, where you can take a step back in time and enjoy a traditional afternoon tea.

Another must-see is the charming French cafe La Vie Francaise nestled among the shops in Wayfarers Arcade. For a real taste of France, tuck into a hearty bowl of French onion soup topped with Gruyere cheese-laden croutons - the best I have ever tasted this side of the Channel.

The festival runs until Sunday, May 17. For more information visit www.visitsouthport.com/foodanddrink
