A Little Piece of Green in Greater Manchester

25 February 2009

With organic food stuffs being promoted to the max at the moment, and supermarkets being shunned for their unethical produce, it is refreshing to find a small co-operative grocery which operates amidst the urban scope of our city. The Unicorn Grocery, located on Albany Road in Chorlton, specialises in fresh organic fruit and veg. Good, hearty stuff, with no frills or excessive plastic packaging. All the fruit and veg on offer are seasonal and regionally sourced, making it reasonably priced, and Unicorn typically offer a range of about 70 lines on any given day. The grocery also has a range of packed goods such as a variety of bread, which is delivered 5 days a week and muesli, dried fruit and nuts, which are all produced and packed on site in their packing room. Due to this you can be sure that the products on the shelves are fresh and haven’t been sitting there for long periods of time! In addition to this, the grocery has expanded their produce to offer a range of cosmetics and household products; all of which are made from natural ingredients. As an ethically principled store, the grocery only sells foodstuffs and household products of non-animal origin. What’s more, they believe in fair and sustainable trade which supports the world environment and economy.
If you get a bit peckish whilst you’re there, or fancy some food on the go, try something from the grocery’s deli counter; they offer freshly made soups, as well as a selection of pasties, burritos, salads and sandwiches. Also try something from their extensive variety of artisan deli produce ranging from olives, to hummus.
To add some novelty to your shopping and maintain the ethical principles of the store, the Unicorn Grocery’s shopping bags are a must. Rather than the usual, non-biodegradable and land filling plastic bags, the grocery offers a range of affordable, and functional tote bags, which come in a variety of colours, and sport a range of positive foodie messages, such as ‘shop local’ and ‘eat your greens’!
If you fancy a change to your usual shopping habits, and want something new, fresh and most importantly, local, then get yourselves down to the Unicorn Grocery and see what they have to offer. Also visit their website for more info: www.unicorn-grocery.co.uk
