TWO very different openings on Friday, October 27 – Alston Bar & Beef in the city centre Corn Exchange and Cask & Kiln in Chorlton. Both have an ampersand in common but otherwise are chalk & cheese.
The former is an offshoot of a hugely popular operation under Glasgow Central Station, offering eight different cuts of beef including fillet, sirloin, a chateaubriand and 500g T-Bone. Each has been selected from the top one percent of Scottish beef from the Tweed Valley and dry hung for 35 days. Maybe at long last a real meaty rival to Hawksmoor.
Alongside there’s a 60-strong range of gins, featuring its home-produced ‘cold-compound’ gins using botanicals foraged in and around Manchester.
The 160 cover venue is reached via a dedicated entrance on Cathedral Street venue Ring 0161 804 5555 or click here to book your table.
Cask and Kiln is at 478 Wilbraham Road, Chorlton, a site that has hosted several different bar ventures in recent times. The promising new incarnation promises a 60-plus selection of small batch whiskies from across the globe alongside gins (it’s compulsory) and an array of bottled craft beers and eight draught ale lines. It will open every day from 12pm until midnight, and beyond at weekends.
