Beer of the week: Dogfish Head IPA

2 November 2010

William France Dogfish Head brewers are the rock’n’roll stars of the American craft brewing scene. They are pretty mental when it comes to making beer and this marvelous example is a continually hopped beer created by adding 60 hop additions in the boil over a 60 minute period - hence the name. So that’s where it comes from - but what does it taste like? Well, the process creates a super-hopped yet balanced IPA. Aromas of grass and pine hint at the powerful flavour to follow, which is made up of the same from the hop but with a well-rounded malt backbone. This really is what an IPA should be: not bitter but showcasing flavour with flair and imagination. An almost perfect specimen.

Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA 6.0%, £5 from Common, 39 to 41 Edge Street, Northern Quarter, Manchester.
