Beer of the Week: JW Lees Harvest Ale 2008

6 December 2010

William France This is one of the hidden gems of the Christmas market. Yes it is worth braving the crowds to taste what is a serious rarity. This beer is astonishing, brewed with serious intentions and released in limited quantities throughout December to showcase the brewers craft.

The ale is matured in sherry casks to impart sweet nutty aromas which make for an impressive depth of flavour. Think apple sauce, tobacco, honey and vanilla with a hint of spice and hop. Mmm. This can be stored on its side like wine to let the taste develop over time. Some American bars have vintages going back over 10 years and out there this kind of ale is highly sought after. Due to demand, it is heavily exported and little heard of in England and especially Manchester even though the brewery is situated in Middleton. I seriously recommend you take up the chance to taste it while you can.

JW Lees Harvest Ale 2008 sherry cask 11.5%, available at the JW Lees stall in Albert Square priced £5.
