Brexit on a plate? George’s Great British Kitchen ticks all the blighty boxes

29 November 2017 by Neil Sowerby

GREAT British Menu, Great British Bake-off and now, on our John Dalton Street doorstep come early 2018, George’s Great British Kitchen, promising to “celebrate British food in a totally unique way”.

“That’s why every single dish has its very own personality,” proclaims the website blurb of this mid-market mini-chain, which started in Nottingham two years ago and has already expanded to Liverpool, Leeds and Newcastle (pictured).

As with Great British Brexit, promises, promises. Their blurb is scattered with “spiffing”, “ruddy passionate about” , “jolly good time”, all a Little England until you notice the multi-cultural melting pot of the dishes at what is ssentially a fish and chip shop format broadened out into a wide range of comfort foods.

“Adding our own very unique twist, by respectfully fusing Great British ingredients with global flavours and dishes Britain is now equally well-known for!” So expect cod pakoras,  wild ocean cod in onion bhaji batter and curried cauliflower and mushroom pie alongside such British classics as chicken goujons and various burgers. Steamed puddings and crumbles to finish. Check out menus here

Inevitably these days gin features heavily on the drinks list and among the wines (ignoring the usual hols tipple caveat) “here’s a splendid English wine we found while on our holidays in Devon. Almost too easy to drink.”

George’s Great British Kitchen, 29 John Dalton Street, Manchester, M2 6DS. Opening early 2018.
