British Pie Awards

14 April 2009

Pies form one of the staples of British home cooking, so what better way to celebrate them than British Pie Awards? You can put pretty much anything in a pie, savoury or sweet, and make a filling hearty meal.

The British Pie Awards define: ‘A pie is deemed to be a filling totally encased in pastry’ and the aims of the award are to celebrate the heritage of the pie, protect and promote regional specialities and support British produce.

Classes in the awards are: Melton Mowbray Pork Pie; Pork Pie; Steak and Kidney Pie; Savoury Pie; Fish Pie; Vegetarian Pie; Cornish Pasty; Other Pasty; British Apple Pie; Other Dessert Pie and Football Pie.

The supreme champion of the awards, Pie of Pies, will win a shield and a prize of £1,000, and the champion in each class will win £50.

The winners will be announced at the British Pie Awards on Tuesday, April 23 at St Mary’s Church at Melton Mowbray.
