Dokes ‘Anglo-Saxon’ pizzeria opens in Prestwich

18 July 2022 by Deanna Thomas

They say you can’t ‘re-invent the wheel’, but that’s not true of Dokes Pizzeria which opened its doors on Wednesday 20th July on Bury New Road, Prestwich. The charm of Dokes is its playful attitude to pizza which utilises extraordinary flavours from the finest British ingredients.

British produce will take centre stage on the menu. Toppings will include cheeses from every corner of the country, salamis and nduja from Curing Rebels in Brighton; creamy British burrata from the home counties and exquisite truffles from Wiltshire. Dokes will also be working with Cinderwood Farm in Cheshire using their wonderful fruit and vegetables on the seasonal menu.

Chef-Patron Michael Clay has worked with a long list of incredible producers across Britain over the last five years at their sister restaurant, Elnecot in Ancoats and he wants to showcase them all at Dokes. But it’s not just about the toppings.

The dough at Dokes Pizzeria is made using extra virgin rapeseed oil from Yorkshire and a blend of flours using British heritage grains from Gilchesters Organic Farm in Northumberland and Shipton Mill in Gloucestershire. Beyond pizzas the Dokes menu will feature seasonal salads and pasta dishes (using pasta supplied by the Yorkshire Pasta Company.) There will also be a selection of small plates that will change regularly depending on what produce is available in that season and brunch will be served on the weekend.

This will be the latest pizzeria in the Dokes portfolio, after originally opening in the Society Food Hall on Barbirolli Square in May 2021 (read more about that HERE.)

Chef-Patron of Dokes Pizzeria, Michael Clay said, “We are really looking forward to opening in Prestwich; it seems to have a real community feel and strong spirit. We hope that we can provide a welcoming atmosphere for everyone while serving up delicious pizzas on Bury New Road.”

Dokes Pizzeria in Prestwich will seat 40 covers with a laid-back neighbourhood restaurant vibe. The interior features a contemporary stripped-back design using their signature terracotta brand colours with booth and table seating. An open plan kitchen will allow customers to view the chefs producing the crisp-based pizzas.

Dokes Pizzeria is opening quite a lot later than they originally intended and the build has been anything but plain sailing. “We took the lease on for the unit just before Covid struck so, finally, two years later it will be very exciting to get the doors open,” admits Co-owner, Wesley Downham. “We have worked with the excellent Phaus interior architects to design the restaurant and we think it is a great looking space for the people of Prestwich to come to.

“Prestwich is a particularly exciting area at the minute, it has some great operators investing in the town and it’s being talked about in the national press as being one of the best places to live in the country. We can’t wait to get started and add to an already vibrant community.”

Walk-ins are always welcome at Dokes Pizzeria in Prestwich and reservations will be open from Friday 15th July 2022. Dokes Pizzeria in Prestwich will open for lunch and dinner from 12pm until 10pm from Wednesday to Friday, then 10am until 10pm on Saturday and Sunday.
