Escape to Freight Island reinvent Sundays with Classic Roasts and specialty cocktails

19 August 2022 by Deanna Thomas

From Sunday 21st August 2022, Escape to Freight Island, Manchester’s inspiring urban landscape, will introduce a new Sunday Roast complemented by specialty cocktails. Guests can expect a warm welcome and a special table service element on the intimate terrace space inside Escape to Freight Island, adjacent to The Jane Eyre’s bar in the sky.

Carnival, one of the latest collaboration concepts headed by critically acclaimed chefs Richard Turner (ex-Hawksmoor) and Sam Grainger will be offering a choice of two courses for £25 or three courses for £29.

Start with a choice of Celery and Beenleigh Blue Cheese with Waldorf Salad; Confit Duck Leg with Red Cabbage Ketchup; or Chilli and Aged Cheddar Churros with Pickle Dip (we’ve tried these btw – they’re incredible).

Sunday mains include Slow Roast 34 Day Aged Rump of Beef (served pink); Roasted Porchetta stuffed with Peach, Sage and Pancetta; Mrs Kirkham’s Cheese and Onion Pie; or share The Beast of 1kg Porterhouse Steak and Cauliflower Cheese, which serves two (a surcharge applies). All the roasts come served with sides including orange glazed carrots, summer greens, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding and gravy.

Desserts include sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream and miso toffee sauce, or grilled English strawberries with elderflower and honey mascarpone.

Additional snacks also available include Batard sourdough with caramelised cauliflower butter; and short rib nuggets with Ogleshield cheese and kimchi ketchup. Side dishes include cauliflower cheese topped with herb crumb, caramelised onions and Tunworth cheese; chargrilled tenderstem broccoli with garlic butter; and Mrs Kirkham’s Lancashire cheese mash potato.

Neighbourhood bar The Jane Eyre, who have a space at ESTI as well as their bar in Ancoats, have created specialty cocktails to complement the new Sunday Roast menu. These include a classic Bloody Mary with vodka, red wine, tomato and lemon as well as variations such as a beetroot Bloody Mary with beetroot Spirit, red wine, tomato, celery bitters and lemon; and horseradish Bloody Mary with horseradish vodka, red wine, tomato and lemon.

They're also offering some boozy after dinner drinks including hazelnut martini with vodka, frangelico, cacao and Dry Vermouth, and ‘Roni and the Eyre’ with Jane Eyre gin, Aperol, Sweet Vermouth and Amaro. A selection of Spritz and wine will also be available.

Escape to Freight Island residents Carnival and Madre have also announced new menu additions which will be available at the food market all week.

Carnival has introduced a new French Dip sandwich with roast beef, mustard mayonnaise and Ogelshield Cheese served in a soft baguette with a dipping pot of madeira jus and fries. Other menu additions at Carnival include confit duck with spiced red cabbage ketchup; crispy roast pork belly with peach hot sauce; short rib and Ogelshield nuggets with kimchi ketchup; and crispy fried scampi with smoked paprika and roast garlic aioli.

Madre has added a brand-new burritos menu, all for £10. Wrapped and toasted in a flour tortilla, all served with house black beans, salsa tatemada, marinated cabbage, cheese, guacamole and chipotle mayonnaise, the burritos menu includes fried chicken with spiced fried chicken, carne asada with chargrilled onglet steak, and crispy fried honey halloumi.

All tacos come in pairs, and the tacos menu also includes Baja Fish Tacos, Green Chorizo Tacos, and the Madre Taco Tray with a choice of any two pairs served with guacamole and nacho chips. The burritos also come with an option to add cheese sauce for dipping.

Sides include Cadillac Nachos with house made nacho chips, cheese sauce, black beans, guacamole, all the salsas, garlic crema topped with spring onion, onion and coriander, pickled jalapeños and chilli dust. Plus, Madre Fries with skin on fries tossed in house habanero vinegar with chilli sat and coriander, or Madre Loaded Fries with skin on fries, topped with melted cheese, all the salsas, picked jalapeños, chipotle aioli, onions and coriander.
