Fancy becoming a street food trader? Join Grub’s free workshop to find out how

19 January 2022 by Deanna Thomas

Manchester’s biggest and friendliest street food venue GRUB will be hosting their free annual New Trader Workshop at 6.30pm on Wednesday 16th February at their headquarters at Red Bank in Manchester’s Green Quarter.

The 2022 School of GRUB is open to anyone interested in starting their own street food business and will be an evening of workshops and talks from experienced traders. GRUB director Jason Bailey will host a Q&A with current stall holders, and those attending will have the opportunity to ask questions about how to start up in street food in an informal and friendly environment. Topics will include how to make the very first steps, common mistakes, menu design, the importance of visuals, what event organisers are looking for, and social media usage.

Over the years GRUB has been a launchpad for some of the nation’s most exciting new faces in street food, including British Street Food Award-winning ArchchisMany food businesses that started with a pitch at GRUB have now gone on to open bricks-and-mortar establishments including Ancoats’ own Hip Hop Chip Shop, Wholesome Junkies, Yakumama and Oh Mei Dumpling. Some traders have even gone on to trade nationally by forming restaurant chains.

“This is one of our favourite events of the year,” says Jason Bailey, Director of GRUB. “We love hearing about all of the fresh and new ideas people have and we love being able to help facilitate some people’s dreams of stepping out of their comfort zone and starting their own business. We have seen some amazing food traders start here and we’re always so excited to see who could be the next big thing!”

Confirmed so far to speak at this year’s event are the owners of Sri Lankan Experience, who began their business after attending this workshop themselves in 2020. They were so inspired by the workshop they started their own company and have grown immensely over the past couple of years. They are now regular traders at GRUB and trade at other street food events across the nation.

As part of the event, potential traders will be given the opportunity to submit their street food business idea. The team at GRUB will then be offering 1:1 mentoring and a pitch fee-free first gig at GRUB with a view to become one of GRUB’s regular traders.

Don’t miss your chance to be at this one-of-a-kind event at the North’s best incubator for street food.
