Fireworks, Forests & Feasts – A Winter festival is coming to Escape to Freight Island

5 October 2021 by Deanna Thomas

Escape to Freight Island, the food, drink and events space at Depot Mayfield near Piccadilly train station, has revealed it will be hosting a two month long winter festival for everyone.

The launch of Winter Island, the UK’s largest fully outdoor and heated market, will begin with a city centre firework display on Friday 5th November. Manchester’s newest winter wonderland will feature a Christmas tree forest and a host of new festive traders and stalls, including Great North Pie Co., a bratwurst grill, traditional hog roast, a mulled wine and hot cider hut, a local chocolatier and an artisanal cheese stall – everything you could wish for as the winter nights draw in and the countdown to Christmas kicks into action.

Escape to Freight Island is an axis of incredible food, drink, music and immersive entertainment, hidden in plain sight at Manchester’s Depot Mayfield – a pop-up project turned into a permanent space… An inspiring urban landscape rebuilt and rethought around a visionary food market, a unique selection of bars, inventive culture spaces and intimate seating.

Over the two most festive months of the year, Escape to Freight Island will host a series of magical ticketed and free events, from family raves, cabaret, live music and DJs, comedy and film nights, live karaoke and Christmas workshops.

They will also be introducing a new Bottomless Champagne Brunch with live music every Saturday and Sunday in November and December, from 10am to 1pm

Highlights of the varied winter programme include Homobloc and Escape to Freight Island’s very own Amuse Bouche on 7th November. A comedy night will be held every Tuesday, while Wednesdays will see the return of The Untold Orchestra series live showcasing Christmas specials. There’ll be live karaoke ‘Masseoke’ on 20th November and 18th December, Craig Charles on 28th November and 12th December; and other jam-packed entertainment from the likes of Guilty Pleasures, Family Gorgeous and family-friendly activities with Playhouse Project, Teachrex, Fun DMC, Born to be Wild Child, plus Christmas workshop and more to be added.

The enchanted festive space will be open for families, friends and colleagues to enjoy the magic of Christmas once again underneath the stars and Christmas trees. Group bookings and private hires are also available for up to 2,000 guests with bespoke packages.
