First look: Cottonopolis – A cotton rich taste of Japan in the NQ

5 November 2015

HAND on heart, Taste of Manchester was underwhelmed at the prospect of a new Northern Quarter restaurant bar yoking together industrial chic original features with an all-day array of Japanese small plates. On the other hand Tripe and Eccles Cakes meets Art Deco, now you’re talking!

Our cynical resistance has crumbled somewhat on getting a preview of Cottonopolis’ backdrop and dishes, which look absolutely stunning. Architect Nick Muir’s first venture into a crowded marketplace is on the corner of Newton Street and Dale Street above Black Sheep skate store.

As in nearby Tariff and dale period details have been retained big time as a focal point in this Grade II-listed former tailor’s warehouse. We particularly like the addition of Manchester’s worker bee symbol as a motif, giving substance to the annexation of Cottonopolis as a name. Except the workers here now will not be cogs in a global cotton industry centred on the city but toiling at the sushi and cocktail ‘coalface’ at this area 120-cover eaterie, due to open on November 13.
