Gin and onions – don’t miss two Lunya celebrations of Iberian icons

10 March 2016 by Neil Sowerby

YOU wait all your Manchester life for one Calcotada to come along and you we get two tasty versions of this Catalan celebration of the Calcot, a kind of spring onion/leek cross.

First up in February was Iberica’s; now Deansgate rivals Lunya are unleashing a day of giant allium worship on Sunday, March 20.

Sampling chargrilled calcots with Romesco sauce is compulsory, but it’s only part of a special menu that lamb chops and chicken with garlic, rosemary and lemon, finished off, inevitably with Crema Catalana. The price is £29.95 (vegetarians £23.95).

Lunya prides itself on its stunning range of Spanish gins as well. At 6.30pm on Thursday, March 20, there’s a chance to taste seven gins and, a tapitas selection while learning how the spirit is made from John O'Dowd of the Liverpool Gin Company. Tickets cost £29.95 per person and there’s a 10 per cent discount on any gin purchased on the night. Places are very limited and so booking is essential.
