AS the dramatically transformed Victoria Station takes shape nearby two of the key food and drink players in this evolving corner of Manchester are joining forces to match Spain’s most iconic wine with acclaimed Japanese food.
Hanging Ditch wine merchants, are hosting a Sherry and Sushi tasting on Thursday, June 11 in collaboration with Umezushi. The (dry) sherries and sushi menu are yet to be confirmed but, like all their regular masterclasses, TOM expects it to be a revelatory event. The original event on Wednesday, June 3 sold out swiftly.
Ben Stephenson and his HD team have always been strong promoters of sherry. Their blurb for the evening, which starts at 7pm, says it all: “Sherry, in particular those styles at the dry end of the spectrum, are one of the world's most underrated, undervalued and misunderstood wines, unique in its production, flavour profile and its amazing potential for creating explosions of flavour when partnered with complimentary foods.”
Umezushi, based in Unit 4 of the Mirabel Street railway arches, near Victoria station, have won huge plaudits for dishes such nigiri of sea bream, sashimi of belly tuna, smoked eel and Japanese octopus salad, so expect a series of such small plates, each partnered by an appropriate sherry.
Tickets cost £35 a head. To book call 0161 832 8222 or drop into the Ditch, which is next door to Manchester Cathedral on Deansgate.
