CHRiSTMAS brings out the best in hotel dining rooms and nowhere does the season of good cheer better than The Lowry. Partnering sumptuous festive Christmas decorations with food to match from fine young chef Andrew Green, the award-winning five-star lodging on the banks of the Irwell offers the chance to crash out afterwards in one of its 165 bedrooms and suites, then destress in the new QMS Skin Spa.
ToM was happy enough just to sip Prosecco in the bar and then slide ovewr to the River Restaurant to sample the current festive menu in the run-up to Christmas. There was a lovely balance to the offering…
To start: Highland smoked salmon, potted shrimp and pickled lemon dressing; Game terrine with Cumberland jelly and pickles; Maple roasted parsnip soup, Josper smoked chestnuts.
To follow: Roast organic Hade Edge turkey with traditional vegetables, sausage wrapped in pancetta and rosemary stuffing ball; Fillet of hake, spiced carrot purée, grilled artichoke, samphire and caper butter sauce; Sandham’s goats cheese and beetroot tart, goat’s cheese mousse, spiced pecans and balsamic pearls
To finish: Dark chocolate pudding with Bailey’s ice cream and coffee sauce; Christmas pudding with vanilla custard and brandy butter; British cheese selection with seasonal chutney. Coffee and mini mince pies and we even got Christmas crackers.
It’s available from 12pm to 2.30pm and 6pm to 10.15pm. The game terrine and hake fillet were especially yummy and at £25 a head for three courses at lunch and £27 dinner it’s a bargain. As is the Afternoon Tea offering, as always.
