Hip Hop Chip Shop opens at New Century

15 November 2023 by Chloe Tuff

Last Friday (10th November) a chip shop like no other opened in Manchester’s most exciting social destination, New Century.

This is the third city centre kitchen for The Hip Hop Chip Shop, joining the venue’s hugely popular indie vendors Banh Vi, The Spice Yard, Koi Sushi, Tallow, and Wild by Ply.

It was voted second best chippy in the UK this year, establishing a loyal fanbase for its traditional “Chippy Tea” dishes, which are all made from scratch and cooked to order with fresh ingredients. The team source their fish from Fraserburgh Port, Aberdeenshire, aiming to serve it within 24-36 hours of being caught.

Inspired by the philosophy of “simple food, done well”, The Hip Hop Chip Shop’s trademark dish is ‘The Feasty Boys’ – battered fish biters, chunky skin-on-chips and minty mushy peas. They also put a unique spin on classic dishes, serving a vegan battered sausage, made with chickpeas and red pepper, with chips, mushy peas, battered gherkins and jalapeños. This hip-hop themed canteen restaurant also offers more than just fish and chips, such as festive specials like cauliflower macaroni and cheese balls and curry batter sprouts.

The Hip Hop Chip Shop’s Managing Director, Jonathan “Ozzie” Oswald said: “We’re buzzing to be opening our third Manchester location in New Century’s kitchens on 10th November, and to join all of the other traders knockin’ out some top quality food. It’s an honour to be part of this iconic venue steeped in cultural history which aligns with our love for music. We can’t wait to cook some hearty meals for anyone who comes to pay us a visit. Catch you all soon!”

The idea originated in 2014 when three friends (Ozzie, Luke and Holly) started borrowing unused equipment from restaurants in the Northern Quarter and trading at Manchester food festivals, before opening their own bar and restaurant in Ancoats in 2018 and a catering unit at Etihad in 2021.

Abby Moore, Managing Director at New Century, commented: “Their authentic take on fish and chips is renowned throughout the North West and they thoroughly deserve all of the accolades and awards they have won. We know they will be hugely popular here at New Century and look forward to welcoming fans old and new.”
