Humans Mcr launch a new Community Grocers to help reduce local food poverty

8 April 2022 by Deanna Thomas

Humans MCR is one of the incredible organisations that tackle food insecurity faced by residents in Greater Manchester. Their vision is pretty straightforward, they simply want to get to a place in which everyone has access to sufficient, nutritious food.

Their work around food poverty seeks to give respect, health, dignity and hope to those in our local communities via a suite of short and long-term solutions.

Now the Blackley-based food bank is thrilled to announce the launch of their new Community Grocers on wheels. Working with a wide network of partners, they are able to offer groceries at a massively reduced cost and deliver them to your door. Humans MCR are currently taking registrations for residents in Manchester, Salford, Trafford, and Rochdale.

“There are multiple benefits to this project including supporting people through the cost of living crisis and beyond, but also helping to reduce the amount of food waste that Greater Manchester throws into landfills each year,” says co-founder Lewey Hellewell.

The food is always within its use-by date or is frozen before that date, and a regular weekly delivery will generally include fresh fruit and vegetables, cupboard staples, bakery, prepared meals, and meat.

Prices start from £6.75 per week for a single adult household including delivery.

This service complements the Humans MCR Foodbank on wheels, which supports people experiencing food insecurity, and has delivered over 103,000 in the last two years. The two services together are key to our mission of breaking the cycle of generational food poverty in Greater Manchester.

Here are a few other ways you might be able to get involved with the amazing work Humans MCR does:

Make a Donation

Every penny is spent on supporting the most vulnerable in our communities.

Donations of food are always welcome and can be dropped off at their packing hub in Blackley. Sometimes they can arrange a collection so please get in touch if you have food items that you can donate.

Volunteer

If you have a few hours spare each week, you could join Humans MCR’s team of super parcel packers that work on a rota basis dependant on your availability.

They are also looking for delivery drivers who provide the vital link between the packing hub and the client. Volunteer to do as many or as few days as you can. You can collect parcels from their packing hub on weekdays in Blackley, choose the route that most suits you and deliver at your convenience.
