January spells beer as Hispi run tasting menu with Alphabet

WE love the way beer and food matching is taking off. Heartening to see cult NQ vegan restaurant V-Rev launching with such an impressive beer list and Piccadilly Gardens newcomer Bundobust even appointing a beer sommelier.

So no surprise to see one of the highest profile restaurant arrivals Hispi in Didsbury creating a beer tasting menu that will be running from January 16-29.

It’s in partnership with Alphabet Brewing Company, no strangers themselves to promoting the joys of food and beer at their regular Saturday Food Fairs with GRUB at their North Western Street brewery.

For Hispi’s ‘New Beer's Resolution' menu they are providing four 330ml beers to accompany five beery dishes for £50 per person.

It starts with snacks of beer battered salt pickles, parsley and tarragon mayo. Then for starters it’s Citrus cured sea trout, fennel and kohlrabi salad (Hoi Polloi Czech Pils); a main of  Sticky featherblade, Crate Digger and pearl barley, bbq, crispy kale (Crate Digger Imperial Stout);  Caramel baked cheese, poached pear, puffed rice (A to the K Oatmeal Pale); and dessert ‘Flat White’ ice cream, flourless chocolate cake, hazelnut butter, honeyed oats (Flat White Sweet Stout).

Meanwhile, Hispi’s chef/proprietor Gary Usher is back on the crowdfunding trail to fund a fourth restaurant in a north west empire that includes Sticky Walnut (Chester) and Burnt Truffle (Heswall). He is aiming to create Wreckfish in an old watchmakers’ factory in Liverpool.

Hispi, 1C School Lane, Manchester M20 6RD. Ring 0161 445 3996 to specifically book your Beer Tasting Menu in advance.
