JPA launch – Manchester’s craft beer community commemorates one of their own

24 September 2018 by Neil Sowerby

WE’D urge all beer lovers among the ToM readership to get down to Port Street Beer House on Wednesday, October 3 to sample an amazing sounding beer for an amazing cause – Headway, the brain injury association.

It’s the launch of JPA, a West Coast IPA brewed in celebration of John-Paul Cassidy, who died after a car crash in April. JP was a key figure in the birth of Manchester’s craft beer scene, as a Port Street bartender at its inception back in 2011.

The special beer is a collaboration between Manchester’s own Cloudwater (voted second best brewery in the world), San Diego’s Jeff Bagby (West Coast IPA brewing legend), and Full Fat (event organisers raising money for Headway).

A Cloudwater blog  pays tribute to Jean-Paul: “His enthusiasm, passion and knowledge welcomed new people into beer, many of whom became regulars and friends. Some of the pub’s regulars went on to become some of Manchester’s biggest food and drink names, many inspired by the passion and expertise they saw from the likes of JP and the team at Port Street. Breweries such as Cloudwater, Beer Nouveau, Torrside, Thirst Class, alongside many others, and events like Independent Salford Beer Fest and Indy Man Beer Con all emerged from this blossoming beer community.”

Wednesday, October 3, 6pm-11pm. Port Street Beer House, 39-41 Port Street, Manchester, M1 2EQ.
