JUICY AND TENDER: Flat Iron's proper good steaks at an affordable price

12 August 2024 by Rhiannon Ingle

If you've yet to check out one of Deansgate's newest openings, Flat Iron, then you're going to want to get booked in STAT as the lovely lot at this joint really know how to put on a good spread.

The whole vibe of Flat Iron, which boasts a hefty 150 covers, is all about serving up the people of Manchester remarkable steak at an affordable price.

We were greeted immediately by an over-flowing portion of their signature beefy popcorn before opening up the menu.

The menu itself is super concise, led by the joint's signature 'Flat Iron' steak offering - a cut taken from the featherblade, known for its flavour, tenderness and juiciness coming in at £14 each.

And if you're into a healthy dose of table-side theatre, the team have also positioned a custom-built charcoal grill at the back of the restaurant with all specials finished on it - including the melt-in-your mouth Wagyu Steak of the Day and a proper hearty Scottish ribeye.

While the meat may be why you come to Flat Iron - the sides are definitely one of the main reasons why you'd stay and come back again (that, partnered with the beyond-stellar service).

We didn't want to leave any stone uncovered and pretty much ordered the lot including; the famous beef dripping chips which were the perfect pair with the Wagyu special, the truffled macaroni cheese and, of course, the crispy bone marrow garlic mash.

And, though it may come as a surprise considering we were eating at a steak restaurant - the Vesuvio tomatoes special was absolutely heavenly, transporting us straight from Manchester to the streets of Naples in just one bite.

We also tried out all four of the sauces on offer with the Bearnaise, Peppercorn and Homemade Smoked Chilli Mayo coming in at just a quid each while the Wild Mushroom one was £1.50.

Our favourite was, no doubt, the Smoked Chilli Mayo. Equally, the Peppercorn was a close second.

To wash it all down, diners have the choice from a specially-curated selection of wines including Flat Iron’s very own Malbec, specially blended by the Flat Iron team using grapes grown in the Limoux area of the Languedoc in southern France along with a decent selection of draft beers and Flat Iron’s signature cocktails.

We opted for the Drunken Mule, Classic Old Fashioned, Passion Fruit Collins and the Sherbet Bellini - all priced at a very affordable £8 a pop and perfectly boozy.

If you're able to, grab a seat in front of the gorgeous bar to feast your eyes on the talented mixologists working away at their creations. Equally, if they can't fit you in view of the bar - you'll still be able to soak in the stunning surroundings in the Grade II Listed historic building as Flat Iron has made a conscious effort to strip back the interiors to reveal original parquet flooring and glazed brick walls to celebrate its architectural features and heritage assets.

Upon leaving, our server handed us some Flat Iron ice-cream tokens, for us to cash in and pick up some soft-serve - the cherry on top to a proper good meal out I'd say.
