Living On The Veg – National Vegetarian Week, May 20-26

10 May 2013

YOU’D think with the horsemeat scandal and the thrifty times in which we live the affordable veggie option would be as on the up as UKIP.

Maybe it’s time you tried the meat-free path, health and ethical. To help you and to celebrate National Vegetarian Week (May 20-26) the Altrincham-based Vegetarian Society have come up with seven fuss-free recipes, none using more than 10 ingredients.

The dish pictured is Anne’s Mushroom Stroganoff, created by Anne Clark from Essex. Once tasted the only way is Veggie!

And who would crave a breakfast fry-up again once they’ve tried Patricia Tricker’s vegan brekkie pancakes with maple syrup. There’s even a curry from Gloucestershire using soya mince that may be a substitute too far in this Taste of Manchester carnivore’s eyes but try it and see.

You can discover all the recipes at http://www.nationalvegetarianweek.org, which features special menus, discounts and events from shops, restaurants and pubsan dthe chance to order free posters. Keep up to date with the Week through Facebook/nationalveggieweek and Twitter @nvw2013.

The Society’s Cordon Vert Vegetarian Cookery School is kicking off summer with a hardy mix of party food and transatlantic travel, backed up by solid advice and practical skills. First up is a Healthy Eating workshop on June 21. This hands-on course teaches students how to combine the right ingredients to ensure a balanced diet and that healthy veggie food can be both exciting and delicious.

Also in June there’s a two day Introduction to Vegetarian Cooking Workshop, which is packed with demonstrations, practical cooking sessions and an introduction to menu planning.

Other summer highlights include Vegan Party Food and Flavours of America workshops, the return of the popular evening classes, as well as the week-long Professional Diploma course, which is aimed at caterers and chefs.
