THE owners of many of Manchester’s best loved bars and restaurants are coming together at NQ bar Tariff and Dale in an epic DJ battle in aid of Action Against Hunger. ‘Too Many Owners’ will see the novice DJs competing head to head over several rounds to be crowned TMO Champions 2018.
The owners hoping to channel their inner Grandmaster Flash on Wednesday, November 7, include Karina Jadhav from Menagerie, Neil Macleod from Albert’s Schloss and Simon Shaw, chef patron of El Gato Negro and Canto. Other owners on the decks are from Tariff & Dale, Crazy Pedro’s, Arcane, Tampopo, Almost Famous, ElnCapo, Dukes 92 and The Bagel Shop.
The first round will showcase each DJ’s ‘skills’, with a 10 minute free-flow set of any music, any genre in any style. Qualifiers will then battle for best audience reaction track for track and a place in the final. The ultimate challenge will then see the finalists showcasing their music knowledge and mixing talents, following each other tracks, beat matching and mixing their way to the title.
Ensuring the skills are up to scratch, Unabombers (above), aka Justin and Luke from Refuge by Volta will lead the commentary, chaired by Adam Binnersley from Mojo.
The event is aiming to raise £10,000 for the Action Against Hunger, through ticket sales and on the night raffle sales. Prizes include a cocktail masterclass and three course meal for 10 people at The Alchemist, VIP Parklife tickets and a Camden Brewery tour. In addition, all profits from the evening will be donated by Tariff & Dale.
Too Many Owners Is the brainchild of Nick de Sousa, owner of T&D and Chorlton’s Lead Station. “Music is such an important part of any experience in a venue and as owners, we ask DJs to entertain our customers every week with no idea of just how difficult it is,” says de Sousa. “We are about to find out!”
Leading a global fight to save lives, Action Against Hunger has a long standing association with the food and drink industry through events such as the annual Too Many Critics cook-off among others.
