MFDF Ale is a malty teaser thanks to Devine intervention

3 September 2014

THERE are certain iconic Manchester-made products. Think Vimto or Jaffa Cakes and down in Trafford Park a certain world-famous (but we can’t name it!) malt loaf. So it seemed a perfect fit for Iain Devine when he entered a contest to choose and help brew Manchester Food and Drink Festival’s 2014 celebratory ale.

The Sale supper club organiser (on twitter @drunkenbutcher) won with his idea to incorporate the special malt extract used for the loaf in a beer he called naturally “Use Your Loaf:. The MFDF’s Official Brewery sponsor, Thwaites invited him to their Blackburn microbrewery, Crafty Dan, to oversee the production of 20 barrels of the stuff. Half goes to the Albert Square hub; the rest is destined for pubs. The Festival runs from September 18 to 29. Get to the tent early for your malty slice of the action.
