Mind your molars as Milkjam trio launch the ultimate dessert bar

13 July 2016 by Neil Sowerby

THERE’s really been no reason for TOM to venture down Manchester’s Oxford Street since Jilly’s Rockworld at No.65 shut six years ago. Oh, apart from San Carlo Fumo for cocktails, of course – mixing with a surprisingly different clientele.

But now this blandest of urban stretches is about to host a sweet sensation. MilkJam – a kind of confectionery/gelato supergroup – opens a yearlong dessert and milk bar residency from Monday, July 18 at No.85 (part of the St James Building).

The trio collaborating for the venture are Claire ‘Ginger’s Comfort Emporium’ Kelsey, Charlotte ‘BakeOrama’ O’Toole (formerly cake guru Home Sweet Home and Harvey Nichols) and Nicki ‘Lush Brownies’ Griffiths’.

What do they bring to the sugary party? Teamwork definitely as they mix and match their skills to produce ice creams with sauces and toppings, fudge and caramel, milkshakes and 15 varieties of brownies and blondies. They promise a ‘soft serve’ ice cream station, brownie bar and cake counter, as well as a giant gumball dispenser.

What to drink there? NQ coffee house Takk  has apparently been working on a cold brew to be bottled especially for MilkJam.

Take out or stay in? Either. There’s a a 30-cover cafe with a retro feel plus there’s a large space upstairs perfect for supper clubs or pudding parties.

Finally why that name? Milkjam is toffee similar to dulce de leche but slightly less sweet.
