You’d be forgiven for thinking you knew the Northern Quarter inside out. But there’s a petit gem that’s recently caught our attention. Tucked away off the main road, Montpellier’s has recently launched a new menu featuring classic French dishes to canny foodies, brought bang up to date with a brilliant bar menu and casual, friendly service.
Is this the Northern Quarter’s best kept secret? – this bijoux bar and restaurant is a place to loose track of time, catch up with friends and eat well.
As the head waiter tells us, it’s the kind of place that you can take your time. Once you’re at a table then it’s yours for the night, and you’re welcome to stay as long as you want.
Not only is there fantastic food, Montpellier’s has launched a special prix fixe menu, where you can enjoy 2 courses, or one course and a drink for under a tenner – just £9.95 for some fantastic French cooking.
Choose from some classic dishes, such as the incredible Moules Marinière, served in a creamy white wine sauce with warm crusty bread for dippin. The Scottish mussels are sourced from the local fishmongers, and the smells remind us of holidays on the south coast of France.
Mains also include the delicious Boeuf Bourguinon, with a generous side of creamy potato dauphinoise. The six hour slow cooked beef is tender and rich, the perfect comfort food.
Alternatively, try the Poulet Chasseur for your main. The French classic of Chicken supreme braised in cognac and white wine, topped off with earthy mushrooms and fresh herbs.
The vegetarian option need not be restricted to veggies! This Tarte Méditerranéen is enough to turn any meat eater onto the veggie option. Vegetables are roasted with garlic, herbs de province and rose wine, then topped off with a crispy puff pastry lid.
The Croque Monsieur also gets a Montpellier’s makeover. The delicious cheese and ham sandwich is served on focaccia and toasted, before being smothered with a creamy béchamel sauce.
And with a menu like this, you can’t help but order dessert to finish off your meal, je ne regrette rein! Try the incredible Gaufre “Belle Hélène”: a Belgian waffle with chocolate sauce and ice cream, crowned with a soft poached pear.
Our verdict? Oui Oui! Go off the beaten track next time your looking to dine, and try out the NQ’s best (but not-so-well-kept) secret.
