Canvas, Manchester’s newest next-generation music, wellness and entertainment venue has now opened at Circle Square. Situated on Oxford Road, opposite the Dancehouse Theatre, it has been designed as a space for music lovers to meet, connect, collaborate and party.
The Canvas Bar and Kitchen is a relaxed but smart dining room decked out in soft tones of forest green and brown. It serves an all-day menu of ‘global small plates’ which take inspiration from the tastiest parts of the world. (See the full menu HERE.)
We went along to the soft opening this week and enjoyed a burrata with heritage tomatoes and crispy garlic toast (£11), handmade steamed pork and prawn dumplings (£8) and a beautifully crispy Korean chicken thigh with Asian salad (£10.)
So many options make it hard to choose (in a good way) with dishes such as barbecue chicken thighs with greens and sweetcorn corn fritter (£12) and crispy beef with pink ginger and hoi sin (£10.) A selection of ‘planta’ dishes means there are strong vegan and veggie options as well as quite a few gluten free dishes for those with dietary requirements.
Oxford Road has many quick lunch options for kebabs or street food already but if you’re looking for somewhere to sit and enjoy a top-quality sandwich, Canvas offers a range of hearty ciabattas stuffed with various fillings (£9-14) including steak, buffalo chicken, homemade fish fingers or a lamb burger with pickld cucumber and feta cheese.
Canvas offers a devoted breakfast and brunch menu which covers all requirements from morning cocktails to fresh juices health shots along with pastries, traditional fry ups an smoothie bowls. They have stayed with the global theme to also offer Persian breakfasts (merguez sausage, hummus, harissa etc), a Hunan breakfast (fried rice, dumplings and chilli fried egg) and American pancakes with banana, bacon and maple syrup.
The Canvas Bar and Kitchen is launched this week with a soft-opening offer of 50% off food until Sunday 10th July for lunch / dinner, and from Monday 11th – Sunday 17th July for breakfast. Details on the soft-opening and booking can be found here.
Canvas describes their cocktails as ‘clean drinks with a global outlook and meticulous preparation’ –the jasmine margarita we enjoyed certainly ticked all those boxes. They are also proud of their wine list with international wines from Argentina, California, Oregon and Italy (to name but a few) along with bottles from some lesser-known regions mixed with classic varietals and exemplary new age wines.
Friday 8th July sees the launch of Canvas’s state-of-the-art 600 capacity music and events room and members’ lounge which will be open until 4am 7-days-a-week.
This comes from the team behind two of London’s most established music venues, Oval Space and Pickle Factory, and as well as hosting live gigs and club nights, the events room will host regular panel talks, wellness classes and dance classes. The Canvas music programme will run throughout the building; from full-capacity gigs to DJ sets in the members’ lounge, plus new talent showcases in the bar and restaurant.
Although Canvas will welcome anyone from anywhere to walk in and feel welcome, applications for the Canvas Membership Programme are now open, where members will be eligible for perks such as will get guestlist access to events, priority bookings, late night members bar access and restaurant discounts – all whilst being part of the community with their say on key decisions within the club. Membership for the under 30’s is £15.00 per month (+2 months free), and £25.00 per month (+2 months free) for those over 30.
A diverse calendar of upcoming events - fully open to the public – starts with the Northern Fashion Week afterparty in the Canvas Main Room on Friday 8th. On Saturday 9th July, join SNO and DISCHI in the Members’ Lounge for an evening of hip-hop, disco, electronic and soul.
