New Zealand restaurant Tahi launches Kiwi all day dining concept

18 August 2022 by Deanna Thomas

Tahi (which is Maori for ‘one’) launches the first restaurant of its kind on 20th August 2022, bringing a myriad of New Zealand flavours to Manchester’s vibrant new neighbourhood, Circle Square.

Established by New Zealand native, Jonathan Perry, the design and food at the 102-seater capacity restaurant has a distinctly Kiwi identity running through it. The venue aims to be a warm and welcoming space from morning to night. Open daily from 9am, the fast-paced open kitchen will serve breakfast and brunch through to dinner and drinks.

Perry was one of the pioneers of the independent coffee scene up North. He opened Tamper coffee in Sheffield 11 years ago, set up the Depot Bakery in 2015, and launched Kommune - a 20,000sq ft independent food hall in 2019. He creates social spaces that appeal to everyone, built around communities, which consistently provide the best product and service to everyone who walks through the door.

“Tahi is a dynamic experience which celebrates the exceptional level of talent from our chefs and is a live showcase of the passion we have for food,” says Perry. “The menu offers a modern, seasonal, and relevant take on Kiwi dishes all made with the finest ingredients.”

All food at Tahi is made fresh daily, with 90% of the menu produced in-house by the kitchen team and on-site bakery. Kiwi Head Chef, Andrew Tranter, and his senior team have created a New Zealand inspired breakfast and brunch menu followed by a casual sharing menu in the evening.

Tranter achieved the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts Award of Excellence in 2018 and was a finalist in the San Pellegrino Young Chef 2019/2020 competition. He has since gone on to achieved acclaim as Head Chef at Pescatore, New Zealand; Senior Chef de Partie at Trinity Restaurant, London (1 Michelin Star); and Senior Chef de Partie at Restaurant Story (2 Michelin Stars).

The talented in-house bakery team can be seen in the open kitchen knocking up Kiwi and Australian inspired classics, Viennoiseries and Tahi Twists. Tahi has teamed up with Ozone Coffee and Hasbean to serve a variety of speciality coffees, also on order is Lalani & Co craft tea alongside a range of house made sodas, juices, and smoothies.

The restaurant will specialising in seasonal takes on Kiwi favourites, championing the best ingredients. Key dishes include Tahi Mince on Toast with braised beef cheek, mushrooms, spinach, and poached eggs; and Tahi Fried Chicken with charred corn fritters and smoked bacon. Vegan dishes include Slow Cooked Butternut Pumpkin with pickled root vegetables, fried kale and puffed buckwheat.

Sticking to its roots, Tahi also offers a wine list that is 90% from New Zealand with a host of New Zealand beers to complements the food menu.

“The vision for Tahi is to create a place for people to come together from locals living nearby to office workers and newcomers to the city,” adds Jonathan Perry. “Whether they are on the hunt for an exceptional brew, a yum yum the size of their head or the best eggs Benedict, we want them to look no further than Tahi.”

Circle Square is Manchester’s new 2.4m sq ft neighbourhood, comprising 1.2 million sq ft of workspace, 1,700 new homes and over 100,000 sq ft of retail and leisure space, all centred around Symphony Park. Tahi joins a a variety of boutique retailers, restaurants, bars, and pavement cafes, and entertainment such as Canvas, One Plus Minimart and Hello Oriental with even more due to launch at Circle Square later this year.

Tahi opens to the public from 8am Saturday 20th August 2022. For more information, visit www.tahieatery.co.uk and @tahieatery on Instagram.
