DISCO Soup is coming to town on Saturday, June 20, as the centrepiece of a mini food waste festival run by the Real Junk Food Project Manchester in partnership with the venue, The Wonder Inn on Shudehill.
The Wonder Inn, best known for hosting Guerrilla Eats of late, has a strong well-being focus that ties in perfectly with Disco Soup – an event that has travelled all over the world. Folk are invited to peel, chop, stir and shake to the beat while a contingen of North West chefs prepare a feast made entirely from food that would otherwise have gone to waste.
The day event (1pm-8pm), with a host of other activities, is free to enter and open to all. Guests will be asked to offer a pay-as-you-feel donation for the meal. Then after 8pm, in collaboration with Shebeen and GRUB Manchester there’s an evening of live bands, DJs, beers, cocktails, food and dancing.
The Real Junk Food Project intercepts food that would otherwise go to waste from supermarkets, restaurants and a number of other sources, and turns it into healthy, nutritious meals for anyone and everyone on a pay-as-you-feel donation basis.
They are currently running pop-up events while they sort out a permanent home in Manchester city centre.Their aim is to develop the UK’s largest waste food cafe, a city centre cookery school and training kitchen, and community focused office, meeting and counselling space.
The French national assembly recently passed a law that makes it illegal for supermarkets to dump unsold food. Instead, large grocery stores must donate the unsold food to charities.
Saturday, June 20, 1pm until late. The Wonder Inn, 29 Shudehill, M4 2AF. The evening (8pm-1am) is a separate event, over 18s only, and requires a ticket from this link.
