Barbakan has finally done it. After years of gentle nagging from Wilmslow locals, the Chorlton stalwart has crossed town lines and set up shop on Moor Lane.
For anyone who’s spent time in Chorlton, Barbakan barely needs an introduction. It’s been turning out bagels, sourdough and some seriously good cinnamon buns for over 60 years, and now Wilmslow will be getting a slice of that action.
Barbakan Wilmslow opened its doors last Friday (10th April), and by 10 am that morning, the cinnamon buns were already unsurprisingly gone.
This new spot is smaller, but it’s got all the hits. Whether it's big, chewy bagels, proper sourdough, Irish soda bread, cakes, pastries - Barbakan Wilmslow has the lot.
The deli counter is stacked too, with cheeses and meats coming in fresh from the Chorlton mothership each day.
Then there’s the Sizzlers - AKA the hot, griddled ciabattas jam-packed with fillings, landing from 11:30 am.
The interiors feature black frontage, monochrome floors and a flash of red with a few seats scattered about if you fancy staying put. Otherwise, it's a great joint to grab and go, whether that's your morning coffee, afternoon pastry or lunchtime toasted bagel.
Owner Frankie’s had this move in mind for years. She says: "It’s been a labour of love. A challenge to myself. Trust in your vision. Late nights, early mornings, long days, working weekends.. legs and feet and back and headaches. Guilt of missing my kids. But to see their eyes widen with amazement when they walked through the doors of my baby Barbakan.
"I’m so grateful to everyone who has been involved and so supportive of my project. My incredible staff in Chorlton who have been helping me prepare the new staff and products, my fantastic builders who have worked all hours to make this happen, and my friends in the industry who have supported me and championed me on. My friends and family have been so, so excited and supportive. The customers: new and long-time. The excited conversations from Wilmslow locals- my neighbours!
