IN a world of fast food that can pile on the hidden, unhealthy extras it is refreshing to tap into an international chain whose motto is ‘Fresh Thinking and Healthy Eating'.Welcome to Pita Pit in Manchester’s Piccadilly Place (and imminently on Deansgate), which serves grilled-to-order pita wraps that are low in salt, carbohydrates and calories.

Serving up a pita

The fact that all orders come in a sustainable catering package complete with napkins, plates and utensils that are all fully compostable, again demonstrate’s the company’s ethical concerns. All this would count for little if Pita Pit’s products weren’t so damned tasty with a refreshing range of meat-free (and in some cases dairy-free) options, making in the perfect pit-stop for vegetarians and vegans. Check out, for example, these filled pitas (all available as wholemeal)

  • FALAFEL: Hand-rolled grilled falafel with houmous, spinach, tomato, onions, cucumbers, black olives, feta cheese and tzatziki.

  • HOUMUS: Mixed leaf, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, green peppers, cucumbers and balsamic dressing.

  • GRILLED VEGETABLES: Courgette and onion with cos lettuce, feta cheese, olives and sweet chilli sauce.

  • GARDEN: MIxed leaf, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, green peppers and balsamic vinegar.

Lots of their dips, too, are veggie-friendly – harissa, honey Dijon, guacamole, tzatziki and many more. They are just 25p apiece as accompaniment to Pita Pit’s signature housemade pita crisps. The salad bar offers zesty toppings of alfalfa sprouts, pineapple and jalapenos. Relax. The staff are there to help. Just order (and leave out) what you want... until your pita is crammed with good stuff.
