Neil Sowerby Two new, very different bars open on May Day bank holiday weekend to breathe new life into Peter Street. First up is Purity, the new venture from the folk who ran Pure in the Printworks. Itâs in the old Bar 38 building opposite Epernay champagne and cocktail bar.
Purityâs target is discerning drinkers who favour an elegant backdrop. They are installing a baby white grand to help create a jazz soundtrack. Downstairs thereâll be a separate dedicated club space with a Funktion One soundsystem â something along the lines of what they have installed at Sankeys.
The food on offer is hearty comfort food. During the day, thereâs a range of sweet and savoury waffles, while in the evening punters are invited to cook Argentine steaks at table on white hotplates of volcanic rock.
Specialist cocktails will be served on the light-filled mezzanine balcony level and the outdoor terrace on Great Northern Square.
Brewdog
The same weekend Brewdog Bar launches in the old Electric Boogaloo premises. Originally the maverick Scottish craft brewers planned to open in the Northern Quarter but switched to Peter Street, where their neighbour will be Trofâs planned venture in what was Brannigans.
Leeds magistrates refused a license for their planned Leeds venture, so this will be their only bar outlet between Newcastle and Nottingham. To discover more about their much-hyped, challenging craft beers, visit www.brewdog.com
Also in the summer pipeline for the Great Northern end of Deansgate is a bowling alley/eaterie, the first northern venue for London chain All Star Lanes. Specialising in âboutique bowlingâ, expect classy cocktails, a rockânâroll soundtrack and no slot machines. To eat, they promise home-cooked American food, including baskets of fried buttermilk chicken and the Elvis milkshake â a peanut butter and jelly concoction.
