There’s a certain kind of happiness that only arrives wrapped in a warm tortilla with salsa dripping down your wrist. The sort of meal where the table’s covered in jalapeños, half-finished Jarritos bottles, guac that disappeared five minutes ago, and someone’s already ordering another round of margaritas before the tacos have even arrived.
Manchester’s properly spoiled for Mexican food these days. We’re talking slow-cooked carnitas, overstuffed burritos, crisp quesadillas oozing cheese, smoky salsas with actual heat, and a WHOLE load of lime and coriander.
Here's a handful of places doing the fan-favourite cuisine justice...
Birria Brothers
If your tacos don’t leave orange consommé running down your arm, what are we even doing here? Birria Brothers have built a cult following of properly rich, slow-cooked beef folded into crisped-up tacos with molten cheese and enough dipping broth to fix a bad day instantly.
84-86 Oldham St, Manchester M4 1LE
OK Taqueria
Tiny spot but massive flavours. OK Taqueria, in House of Social, keeps things stripped back in the best possible way, letting smoky meats, punchy salsas and fresh tortillas do the heavy lifting. The crispy pork belly tacos deserve serious attention, especially with a pile of jalapeños and one of their dangerously easy margaritas on the side.
House of Social, 10 Coleman Street, Manchester, M15 4ND.
El Jefe Birria
Messy, cheesy, glorious chaos. El Jefe Birria, in MALA, specialises in the sort of food that requires at least seven napkins and absolutely no dignity. Their birria quesadillas are ridiculous in all the right ways, packed with slow-braised meat, stretchy cheese and proper spicy salsa that doesn’t mess about.
8 Dale St, Manchester M1 1JA
Listo Burrito
There’s something deeply comforting about a burrito roughly the size of a newborn child. Listo know exactly what they’re doing when it comes to stuffed tortillas packed with rice, beans, juicy meat, guac and enough salsa to make the foil wrapper fight for its life. Cheap, cheerful and consistently spot on after two margaritas too many.
91-93 Oxford St, Manchester M1 6ET
Madre
Madre brings proper Mexico City energy to Manchester with smoky tacos, sharp margaritas and salsa that creeps up on you after three bites. The Baja fish tacos alone deserve a standing ovation. Also one of the best places in town to accidentally spend four hours eating and drinking.
Minshull House, 47 Chorlton St., Manchester M1 3FY
Pancho’s Burritos
An absolute Manchester institution. Located in the Arndale Market food court, Pancho’s has been saving hungry shoppers, students and hungover office workers for years with giant foil-wrapped burritos stuffed to breaking point. No fuss. No gimmicks. Just really good Mexican food served fast with extra jalapeños if you know what’s good for you.
FC1, Arndale Food Market, 49 High St, Manchester M4 3AH
Don Tacos
Don Tacos goes big on flavour and even bigger on portions. Expect dripping birria tacos, loaded fries, cheesy quesadillas and enough hot sauce options to make your forehead sweat slightly. The kind of place where you promise yourself you’ll save half for later, then immediately ignore that plan.
61-63 Wilmslow Rd, Manchester M14 5TB
Pico’s Tacos
And last but by no means least is Pico’s Tacos, which keeps things colourful, loud and packed with flavour. Fresh tortillas, punchy homemade salsas, properly seasoned meats and crisp toppings piled high. Their tacos feel fresh, vibrant and dangerously easy to demolish in record time.
Mackie Mayor, Smithfield Market Hall, 1 Eagle St, Manchester M4 5BU
