Supper clubs are seriously having a moment right now in Manchester and there's a brand-new one to add to the list
An all-new Japanese dining concept, NIWA Yakitori, has now launched in the Northern Quarter with an aim of elevating the city’s Asian culinary scene.
NIWA [meaning garden] Yakitori [a refined style of skewered chicken] was born following inspiration from Tokyo's intimate backstreet food spots.
Unlike other popular culinary styles, Yakitori requires intricate preparation techniques, with chicken carefully butchered, skewered, and grilled at high temperatures over Binchotan (Japanese charcoal) to embrace natural flavours.
Opening with a Supper Club series taking place every Friday and Saturday night from 6PM, guests can explore a deliciously crafted menu.
The Yakitori Experience menu includes 6 classic chicken skewers or flavourful vegetable dishes for £36pp, served with miso soup, steamed sushi rice and grilled pineapple. Choose from the likes of Teba, crispy grilled wings with lemon and shichimi, Negima, succulent thigh with spring onion and tare sauce, Mune, chicken breast with gochujang and honey, or vegetarian Asparagus with nori and onsen egg.
Guests can also choose to leave the menu to the chef with the Omakase experience. For £55pp the NIWA team will present a collection of dishes across the menu, such as Chicken Oysters, a rare cut, and Grilled Prawn with sesame sauce and chive oil presented especially to your table.
The meal isn’t complete without a Kombucha Coffee Martini or a Sake flight where diners can even choose their own traditional cup.
End the evening with something sweet. We recommend the Matcha Affogato, which is matcha poured over a silky scoop of vanilla ice cream or Japanese cotton cheesecake.
For workers or passers-by looking for a taster, NIWA also offers a Yakitori dish and bottle of Japanese beer for just £10.
NIWA Yakitori is set in the atmospheric walls of the well-loved daytime cafe, North Star Piccadilly, located in Grade-II listed Carver’s Warehouse, Manchester’s only stone-built warehouse.
