The Black Friar is planning to open a Magical Medieval Hideaway for festive feasting

10 October 2022 by Deanna Thomas

This November, The Black Friar’s Garden Bar will be transformed into their new Winter Tavern where guests can escape the chill with fires, frolics and feasting over the festive season.

Just a stone’s throw from Manchester’s bustling Spinningfields business district and less than a 10 minute walk from The Arndale, the red-bricked Victorian pub is the perfect setting to celebrate Christmas and seasonal get-togethers.

The Winter Tavern aims to give guests a merry olde English knees up. Taking cues from their ‘Black Friar’ mascot, Friar Benedictine, the Tavern is a little slice of Middle England history with glittering candles, roaring fires, rugs and furs adorning the cosy space.

The Black Friar has partnered with the prestigious Highland Park 12 Whisky to help bring the space to life. Distilled in the Scottish Orkney Islands, historically known as the ‘Viking Kingdom’, Highland Park brings expertly crafted spirits and new warming whisky cocktails to the tavern. Alongside a new Winter drinks menu - including apple and cinnamon hot toddies on tap, guests will not be short of fantastic tipples.

The Winter Tavern is taking bookings now for 21st November and beyond. Book online for groups of up to 8 people (4 people minimum booking) or make an enquiry for larger groups. The Tavern can accommodate up to 45 people seated and 55 standing for private parties. The Winter Tavern is equipped with everything you need to get the party going including its own bar, DJ station and bathrooms.  The Black Friar team can help plan your event, and even provide entertainment from their vast pool of contacts. The space is also bookable for New Year’s Eve.

As Manchester and Salford’s most prestigious gastro pub, guests can expect an unrivalled festive feast created by The Black Friar’s talented head chef Ben Chaplin. The Winter Tavern will offer The Black Friar’s Christmas menu alongside an upcoming Autumn/Winter á la carte menu of starters, mains and desserts - all prepared in-house with the finest seasonal ingredients. The canapé menu is also available to all private hires in The Winter Tavern, or in any of The Black Friar’s impressive event spaces. Also available are a selection of grazing station dishes, designed to be shared.

All Christmas bookings include crackers and freshly baked mince pies, with evening bookings also including a glass of prosecco for each guest. Lunch starts at just £27pp, and dinner £35.
